Career
II started my career as a laboratory technician/teacher at a secondary school in late 1976, when it was compulsory to work for at least two years before joining the then only University in the country – the University of Dar es Salaam. After completion of BSc in Chemistry and Zoology (coming on top of the chemistry class in all the three years of study), I was appointed Tutorial Assistant in Chemistry in March 1982. I rose through the ranks of Assistant Lecturer, Lecturer, Senior Lecturer to Associate Professor in 2004. My principal tasks are teaching, research, supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students; and consultancy. Due to lack of facilities to do Organic Synthesis (my PhD 1991), I shifted into environmental chemistry, especially pesticide residue analysis in the 1998. I now lead a research group, have supervised 10 MSc and PhD students; and over 20 undergraduates from a number of countries including the US. I have over 65 retrievable publications including papers in Chemosphere, Talanta, Ambio and Environmental Pollution. I have also formulated and coordinated a number of research projects.
SETAC Involvement
I have been involved with SETAC since 1998 when I first had the resources to join SETAC Europe. Two of my then PhD students attended the SETAC meeting in Britain in 1998. I have since been a member of SETAC Europe and on the formation of SETAC Africa; I have been collaborating with the branch. ANCAP, whose Executive Secretary I am, organised the ANCAP-SETAC Africa International Conference on the Use of Pesticides in Developing Countries which took two years. I attended the SETAC Europe meeting in The Hague in May 2006 and presented a poster.
Motivation for standing for election
SETAC's mission is to support the development of principles and practices for protection, enhancement and management of sustainable environmental quality and ecosystem integrity. SETAC promotes the advancement and application of scientific research related to contaminants and other stressors in the environment, education in the environmental sciences, and the use of science in environmental policy and decision-making. I believe in SETAC’s mission and I will do as much as I can to help achieve SETAC’s misson.
