Career
I started as an Environmental Risk Asssessor in the Pesticide Registration Section for Biocides in the UK and was involved in both the review of TBT anitfouling paints and in generating enironmental regulatory requirements for anti-fouling paints. I joined Pesticides Safety Directorate (PSD) where I became Head of Ecotoxicology Branch and was responsible for conducting regulatory environmental risk assessments. I was also involved in the drafting of Annexex II, III & VI (data requirements & acceptability criteria) of the EU Plant Protection Product Directive 91/414/EEC, and chaired the EU Peer Review Expert Group meetings for Ecotoxicology. I then joined Zeneca and became Head of Ecology in Syngenta where I headed the Ecotox Labs at Jealotts Hill and Basel, conducting both aquatic & terrestrial regulatory ecotox studies, as well as ecological risk assesments. In my new role in Syngenta, I am now responsible for developing & maintaining strategic enabling research links with external research institutions.
SETAC Involvement
I have been a member of SETAC-Europe for over 10 years and have been involved in a number of influential international SETAC-Europe workshops eg Chaired HARAP Workshop (Higher-tier Aquatic Risk Assement for Pesticides) and sat on Organising committee of ESCORT2 Workshop (EU Non-Target Arthropod Testing & Risk Assessment Framework). I was elected to SETAC-UK Council for 2 years around 1997 and have been a 'Sustaining Member' with Syngenta for last 9 years.
Motivation for standing for election
SETAC is a potentially very valuable forum which brings together industry, academia and government researchers and regulators alike, to discuss technical areas of common interest, in the area of environmental risk assessent and ecotoxicology. With formation/revision of new chemical regulations within EU eg REACH & 91/414/EEC, there is a real need to bring experts together to discuss the increasing environmental and techo-regulatory challenges facing all chemical stakeholders. Consequently, this is a real opportunity for SETAC Europe to offer one of the very few forums which can bring together experts to address some of these issues. With my background from both industry and regulatory authorities, I would like to help SETAC Europe establish itself as the forum to discuss/resolve some of the environmental challenges and debates facing the chemical industry and regulators alike.
