Career
I have a BSc in marine biology, an MSc in Aquaculture and a PhD in ecotoxicology. The latter involved the assessment of biomarker responses in marine invertebrates following exposure to contaminants, in both laboratory and field conditions. My main field of research is nutritional toxicology in the marine food chain. The contaminants that have been the focus of my research to date are mercury, cadmium, copper, arsenic, dioxins (PCDD/F), PCBs, and PBDEs, and their toxicokinetics and dynamics in fish. I head a research group on seafood safety at the National Institute of Nutrition and Seafood Research which involves co-ordinating research activities and strategy, and responsibility for budget and personnel. In recent years, I have been involved in risk assessment related (directly or indirectly) to the environment, internationally, through active membership in the European Food Safety Authority's (EFSAs) Scientific Panel on Additives and Products or Substances used in Animal Feed (FEEDAP), working group member of EFSA’s Scientific Panel on Contaminants in the food chain (CONTAM), the European Commission’s former Scientific Committee on Animal Nutrition (SCAN) participation in a SETAC Pellston workshop and through projects for the Nordic Council of Ministers.
SETAC Involvement
I have been active in SETAC since 1995 and have presented research at several SETAC conferences (European, American and World Congresses). I have participated in a SETAC Pellston workshop and have participated at meetings of the Metals Advisory Group. I have scientifc publications in media published by SETAC press (Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry; and a book chapter). I was elected for SETAC Europe council in 2005. |
